Also known as Facebook Banner, this graphic that sits on top of the page is the first thing that people will see once they enter it, so its important to grab their attention. In this post, I’m going to provide you with some ideas on the Best Practices for an Ah-mazing Facebook Cover Design, so your design is represented exactly as you want across all devices.
Facebook Cover Photo Dimensions
According to Facebook, your cover photo dimensions should be at 820 pixels wide by 312 pixels tall on desktop computers and 640 pixels wide by 360 pixels tall on mobile devices.
While this is excellent information, there are no specifications on what happens with the design across different devices, neither what Facebook does in terms of resizing/cropping/adjusting the image; what may look good on your Desktop computer, it may not look terrific on your Smartphone.
The Struggle was real.
When designing the Facebook cover photo, you must be very careful about the area used, as some of your design elements won’t appear on mobile; creating your image based on the safe zones will help your design look good everywhere.
The AH-mazing solution
Facebook Cover Designs dimensions is a work in progress, and to this date (July 2020) this is what has worked for me:
- Work with a 2x size for the cover file (Meaning it is going to be 1702px x 630px) as it will help with the quality of the image once it is uploaded.
- Keep all critical elements such as text and logos inside the blue area (aka Safe Zone) as Facebook will crop the sides on mobile devices.
- Fill the pink zones with graphics/images that you would be okay with not showing up on mobile devices.
I’ve prepared a very simple Template that can be downloaded – for free- and used as a reference when designing your Facebook Cover Designs, it is layered so you can see all the zones available for your design.
